About “Jollof Wars” during IATF2023 in Egypt

    Story.Mohammed A. Abu

A subtly spiced and smoky version of Ghana’s jollof rice prepared by Ghanaian Executive Chef Mr. Dediha George, gave him a win over his Senegalese Chef Mr. Abdoulaye Tamsir Ndir, and Nigerian Chef Mrs. Moyosoreoluwa Odunfa contestants.

This was within the context of The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank)’s launch of an African Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Programme under its Creative Africa Nexus Initiative (CANEX) as one of the major outcomes of its recently ended 3rd Intra African Trade Summit(IATF2023) in Cairo,Egypt.

The CANEX African Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Programme is the newest vertical within the CANEX programme and featured nine celebrity chefs from Africa and the Caribbean taking part in masterclasses, live cooking demonstrations and conversations with culinary experts.

The inaugural session of the programme, concluded with a live demonstration, dubbed the “Jollof Wars” to highlight the unique flavours and cultural diversity of Jollof rice among Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal

Prof. Benedict Oramah, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, said that the introduction of the programme would help to refocus continental efforts towards local food production to ensure food security, reduce high food costs and imports and minimise the impact of external shocks on Africa’s food supply chain.

Delegates at the IATF2023 found themselves amidst a delightful culinary celebration, organized by CANEX and African Food Changemakers, and today’s spotlight was on the iconic Jollof rice—a dish that sparks the famous “Jollof Wars” between Nigeria, Ghana, and Senegal among other West African countries.

The chefs behind these delectable creations included Ghanaian Executive Chef Mr. Dediha George, Senegalese Chef Mr. Abdoulaye Tamsir Ndir, and Nigerian Chef Mrs. Moyosoreoluwa Odunfa.

  • Africa Finance Corporation exits stake in Ghana’s Takoradi Port to Yilport Holding

Africa Finance Corporation exits stake in Ghana’s Takoradi Port to Yilport Holding

LAGOS, Nigeria, November 2, 2023/ — Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) (www.AfricaFC.org), the continent’s leading infrastructure solutions provider, has exited its 35% equity investment in Atlantic Terminal Services Limited (ATSL), the concessionaire for the expansion of Ghana’s Takoradi Port, to the global ports and container terminals operator Yilport Holding. This is testament to the Corporation’s ability to attract international 3rd party capital and exit strategic infrastructure assets built by derisking through AFC’s unique project development and construction offering.

In 2019, AFC committed to invest up to US$138 million in equity and debt for the Takoradi Port Expansion Project. The project, which is approaching the operational phase, reduces the cost of imports and exports to and from the western and central regions of Ghana and neighbouring landlocked countries by modernising a container and multipurpose terminal under a 25-year concession for its design, engineering, financing and construction. Through this transaction, AFC exits its shareholding, while Ibistek and Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority remain as shareholders in the project. AFC will continue to be lender to the project, fully committing to ensuring its success.

A vital seaport in Ghana’s Western Region, Takoradi plays a crucial role in the nation’s economic growth and regional connectivity. It offers shorter and less-congested links to west and central Ghana, including the Takoradi region, which boasts of substantial agricultural activity including 50% of Ghana’s cocoa production, as well as manufacturing, industrial and business parks, and a growing natural resources sector. The port is also well suited to provide linkages to neighbouring landlocked countries. The project forms part of the country’s national development plan to revitalize and industrialize the western region and enhance Ghana’s overall efficiency and competitiveness by reducing the cost of imports and exports, building local capacity and generating direct employment opportunities.

Samaila Zubairu, President & CEO of Africa Finance Corporation said, “This exit marks a significant milestone for AFC’s impact on the continent and we take pride in our pivotal role in driving the implementation and de-risking of the Takoradi Port Expansion. The project is reshaping West Africa’s economic landscape and partnering with a reputable investor like Yilport Holding aligns with our mandate to catalyse the inflow of global investment into Africa to transform supply chains, create local jobs and enable resource beneficiation.”

Yilport Holding, a subsidiary of Amsterdam and Istanbul-based Yildirim Group, has been building world-class, multipurpose port facilities since 2004, with a target to become a top 10 global port operator by 2030. Investment in Takoradi represents an ideal entry point into Africa for Yilport, which plans to transform the port and its adjacent area into a logistics and trading hub, ensuring high volumes of traffic.

“The acquisition of a stake in the Atlantic Terminal Services through AFC’s valued partnership marks a momentous occasion for Yilport Holding,” said Robert Yuksel Yildirim, Chairman and CEO of Yilport Holding. “This serves as a strategic gateway for us to establish our presence in the African market, and it aligns seamlessly with our commitment to fostering world-class logistics and trading hubs on an international scale.”

AFC is focused on developing long term infrastructure solutions that improve the resilience and sustainability of cost-efficient supply chain logistics. In the past year, the Corporation has completed construction of two new ports, Terminal à Conteneurs De Nouakchott (TCN) and the San Pedro (TIPSP) Multipurpose Industrial Terminal in Côte d’Ivoire.

  • Giving a Graphite touch to Wa’s Emerging Gold Image in Ghana

Giving a Graphite touch to Wa’s Emerging Gold Image in Ghana

    Story: Mohammed A.Abu

Over a decade of passion and commitment on the part of  the Australia Securities  Exchange(ASX) listed company ,Castle Minerals Ltd ,is set to give Ghana’s up country’s generally agrarian driven economy, a diversification to  commercial gold and Graphite(one of the”Critical Minerals”) production touch.

    Gold

The company’s  ambitious Wa Gold Project owned by its local subsidiary,Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd,has since earned for the Upper West region in international investor community circles the accolade, ‘The Emerging North Western  Gold Province”

The project is located approximately 10km away from the regional capital of Wa. It extends over a total land holding of 3,164km² and comprises three main deposits namely Kunche, Bepkong and Julie along with two satellite deposits Aduane and Collette.

The open pit gold mining project includes a 1.2 million tonne per year carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing plant for treating oxide and transition ore. It is estimated to produce approximately 100,000oz of gold a year over an initial mine life of seven years.

    Graphite

In an official announcement  today, Monday, Castle Minerals Managing Director,Stephen Stone notes, “Castle Boosts Kambale Graphite Resource to 22.4Mt Higher Confidence Indicated Resource Increased 55% Solid Platform Established to Underpin Development Ambitions”

“Graphite concentrate sample successfully produced during Perth test work is now in Germany undergoing evaluation for its use in lithium-ion batteries (“LiBs”), the announcement disclosed.

The emerging flagship Kambale Graphite Project owned by 100% Ghanaian subsidiary, Kambale Graphite Limited, is located in the country’s Upper West region.

Castle Managing Director, Stephen Stone commented:

“We are delighted to deliver for the fast-emerging Kambale Graphite Project a 38% increase in contained graphite and can now boast a Mineral Resource Estimate of 22.4 million tonnes grading 8.6% TGC containing 1.94 million tonnes of graphite. Forty-three percent of the MRE is in the higher confidence Indicated Resource category.

“The MRE increase provides a very solid platform upon which to advance our development ambitions, especially now that Castle has demonstrated in test work that a fine flake graphite concentrate of commercial specifications can be produced using a conventional flotation process. This is the primary material used in the manufacture of lithium-ion battery anodes.

“This all comes just as China this week has introduced a surprise ban on natural and synthetic graphite exports to protect its battery and car manufacturing industries.

“This will immediately intensify the multi-billion-dollar rush by the USA, EU and other non-China EV manufacturing nations to secure other sources of graphite, battery anodes and EV batteries which they are presently almost totally reliant on China for.

“The accelerating take-up of EVs alone is driving an enormous increase in demand for graphite for use in lithium-ion batteries for EVs, power storage units and other chargeable consumer devices.

“Each EV contains between 30kg and 60kg of battery grade graphite where every kg of that is derived from at least 3kg of natural flake concentrate.

“With another 100 million light EVs forecast to be on the road by 2030, it’s no surprise that forecasters are predicting a natural graphite concentrate supply deficit as current and proposed supply is wholly inadequate.

“Castle continues to fast-track and de-risk its Kambale Graphite Project and has just kicked off a specialist evaluation in Germany of the concentrate to confirm its suitability for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries.

“Mining and metallurgical engineering groups will be appointed shortly to assess the technical and commercial merits of establishing on-site a commercial-scale mining and processing facility.

“With good access to two international ports in Ghana that can service the USA and EU markets, Kambale has a strategic importance as a still uncommitted resource.

“The Project will also use mainly hydro-generated “green-grid” power. With Ghana recognized as a safe, stable and established mining jurisdiction, this all bodes well for the Project’s future.” Mr. Stone further disclosed.
